The Russian Revolutionary: Zaha Hadid
This video on Zaha Hadid's inspiration focuses very strongly on the works of the artist Malevich. Art is a huge influence on Hadid's work.
Malevich's work focused strongly on block colour and shapes for a lot of his career. He had humble origins and was one of 14 children. But he grew and grew till he became a huge name in the artistic world. One of the things which Zaha said in the video which stood out to me the most was how the abstract art takes on a different form when physically moved. For example, taking an image off the wall and putting it on the floor can turn it into a plan for a building.
Malevich used his artistic style to form 'Architons', architectural sculptures based on his concepts and methods. Zaha Hadid has taken inspiration from all aspects of Malevich's work. However, the idea of responding to the meaning of the art as opposed to the physical piece itself seems to stand out to her. I think that this is an interesting idea.
Many points raised in the video were very interesting, I will be applying them to my own work and designs and reflecting upon them whilst I experiment and research. Thinking about the video and it's content, the idea of using art to explore context and inform design intrigues me. There is a rich history to art which runs along side many key moments and eras of the wider sense of history.
Architecture is an art form. So to suggest that architecture is influenced by art is altos suggest that architecture is influenced by other architecture, and it is. We use research to look at other examples of architecture all the time in order to influence our designs. Why is it then that we fail to look at other art forms as regularly. It is entirely feasible to suggest that many of the designs we look at in our research were influenced by art, so why not look to the route of the original design influence ourselves?
The meaning behind the Zaha Hadid video was not just that she uses art for influence. Personally I believe that we should all look to the art world in order to better inform and understand our designs. I will without doubt be taking advantage of this in my own designs, and it is this that I have taken the most from during my reflection of this video.
