The concept for a design is often the driving force behind it. For this project, I have been drawn to the concept of 'INTEGRATION & EXPLORATION'.
Right from the first time I set foot in the site, I had no desire to build in the Lumsdale Valley site. This was simply because of how beautifully natural and mysterious and preserved it was. I didn't want to ruin it. Therefore, wherever I head with my design, it must integrate with the site in one way or another. I want my design to have a minimal impact on the site, but also to work with the area too.
I do not necessarily feel that trying to blend into the environment is the right thing to do. Nor do I think that copying the ruins would suffice. It is possible that to integrate with the site and really work with it, the design proposal might need to contrast with the environment it is in. This is not to say that it must be made from unnatural colours or materials, it must still respond to the site itself.
The second part of my concept is 'Exploration'. The client that I am working with is the ecologist client. As such they will be spending a lot of time outside, exploring the area and studying it. Whilst we are on our site visit, it was very cold and wet, not many of us had a desire to remain outside. I would like my design to encourage the ecologists into the site as much as possible. This can be done through use of lower ceilings, as in Fallingwater.
I think that this will be an interesting concept to work with and look forward to exploring it.
