TED.com is a brilliant place for inspiration. TED Talks can range in length, but are almost always fascinating insights into the works and studios of other people. There are all kinds of categories to search through and learn from. The video below is of a TED Talk called 'Building Uniqueness' and was very inspirational to me.
This talk is by architect Moshe Safdie and focuses on a few projects from throughout his career. The talk is very appropriate for this project as it is all about responding to sites and building a piece of architecture which is unique to that place. This said, some of his ideas and designs are applicable to other areas of the world, so long as they are used with appropriate justification.
Below are three screenshots of ideas which in inspired me the most during his presentation.
Below are three screenshots of ideas which in inspired me the most during his presentation.
The above screenshot is of a walk way which allows the light to break through in strips. I had a similar idea whilst sketching some concept designs for my buildings, so it was interesting to see this being used.
This screenshot is of an underground room at the end of the above tunnel. It is coated in mirrors on all walls, allowing the whole room to reflect any light source and create a starry atmosphere from it, something which you don't have to be an astronomer to appreciate.
This final screenshot is actually of an observatory. It was created on it's own small island to be specifically placed amongst the water. I like the idea of having a building by water, it is something so natural and common (covering 70% of the planet!) but it is not commonly lived next to. I like how there is a bridge to link the building to the land too. You do not directly enter the building, you approach it instead.
