Similar to the work which I looked at regarding painting with coffee, Steven Spazuk creates his images in a completely different way.
These pieces of work are very powerful and strong. They are detailed and accurate. They contain wide varieties of tone. And they are made using fire. Each image is burned using a candle to create soot. Steven says he waits until a picture starts to reveal itself before following a direction, but it is at this point that he starts to scratch away the soot and begin to form his piece.
Perhaps what I find most interesting about this is that Steven allows the work to introduce itself. He waits for something to become apparent and then starts to make it. He respects the fire and how it works. I like that the fire, something which can be so destructive, produces something so beautiful. It seems as though these are complete opposites with one another, just as with the extreme moods of bipolar disorder.
