To get a good feel for the Arboretum, the class went on a site visit to learn about the park and explore it.
We grouped together to map out the available space that we have for our designs. Our tower must have a footprint no larger than 25sqm, excluding any ramps etc.
The space was visualised in the photo opposite and gave a good idea of how much area we had to work with. Whilst doing this, we also walked around the mapped out area to mirror to the path of the Sun during both the Summer and Winter Solstices. This provided useful information for us. For reference, on the longest day of the year (the Summer Solstice) the Sun rises in approximately NE and circulates all the way round to set in the NW. The shortest day of the year (the Winter Solstice) goes from SE to SW.
