I decided to return to the Arboretum to get some more photos and explore the site a bit more. I wanted to engage with it on a more personal level to try and work out where in the park I would like to select as my location for the observation tower.
I did this at a different time and on a different day, a Tuesday as opposed to a Friday like last time. This allowed me to further understand how the site is interacted with throughout the week. Research has revealed a more general, yearly insight to how the sight is used, for example higher volume and more activity in Summer, but it is interesting to view changes on a more regular time scale.
I am interested by this location within the site. It is found by the aviary and pond at the southern end of the site. The trees are tall and capable of seeing out of the Arboretum, but have plenty of space underneath to build up towards the canopy. There is a building already placed there, but this is not necessarily a problem. A design could quite easily work around and even on top of the existing structure. There is also space in front of the area to form an entrance. There are some other places which interested me too, but these trees intrigued me. I would like to be able to encourage people to interact with the nature inside the park themselves, by being able to touch the tops of trees. I think that this is the main draw of these trees, their leaves are so out of reach that I feel the experience of touching them would be enhanced. They are also high enough to be able to see out of the park too, potentially providing a view of the city. More photos of the site can be found in the galleries below... |
