Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental is a design for a hotel in Songjiang in China. It is aimed to be a 5 star resort built into an old quarry. It makes use of all three elements which the brief for this project describes, albeit in a slightly different way. It is built up by approximately 90m, and yet is also underground.
The above image shows the proposal of the Shimao Wonderland Hotel. It is a huge complex, but it is hidden amongst the landscape through use of the giant quarry. The site has it's own waterfall which pours water down into lake, and the building has responded to this. There is a large glass section of the hotel which runs down the centre of the building, mirroring the appearance of a waterfall.
I love this design, I think it is an inspiring use of an existing site which could be otherwise considered a problem. Furthermore, I feel that this is a much better way to build such a large building. It makes the hotel blend away into the landscape and does not disrupt the landscape. This is something which I would love to incorporate into my own designs.
