SOM TIMBER TOWERS Skidmore, Owings and Merril, a design firm, released an idea for timber skyscrapers in 2013. The idea is simply to make towers as tall as current skyscrapers, but out of timber, using only reinforcements of concrete in strategic locations. The result of such construction, they claim, could cut the carbon footprint of towers by 75%. I think that the resulting lines from all the timber construction is somewhat beautiful. It makes a refreshing change to the constant use of concrete and steel, and it would be nice to see something more natural in a city The tower actually reminds me of a Japanese pagoda. This is due to the use of wood rising high up in layers. To an extent there are also familiarities to Chinese pagodas too, something worth bearing in mind considering there is a Chinese bell tower in the Arboretum. |

Our next Design Studio project is based around the creation of an observation tower for Nottingham's Arboretum.
The ventilation strategy required special thought for Michael.
I was thinking about how to enter the design. My idea at this point is to have the building on the side of the building, similar to 'rucksack house'.
My design is quite centrally focused on the idea of tilting the box.
